A note on how this site is made. The point is to read well and to load fast, so almost nothing here is decorative.
Stack
Static files, served close to the reader. The site is built with Astro and ships as static HTML and CSS. There is no client framework and no runtime on the page. It is deployed on Cloudflare Pages, which serves the prebuilt files from the edge.
Type
Three faces, each doing one job.Newsreader sets the display type — the wordmark, titles, and the italic margin asides. Source Serif 4 carries the running prose; it is the reading face. IBM Plex Mono handles the labels and dates in the margin. All three are self-hosted with Fontsource, so no request leaves for a font host.
Method
Built in passes, not in one sitting. The site was built in bounded iterations, each followed by a separate critic pass; the visual direction was chosen by a small internal tournament before any page was written. The result is meant to be quiet and to hold up under reading, not to impress on first glance.
